Although I was a little kid when this was going on, I do remember, we called them "Boxes".

I owned a JVC...they were the best...what type did you own?

The news media started calling them "BoomBoxes" to refer to them in a derogatory way. Older people complained that they just went "boom,boom,boom".

This is a fairly accurate piece, considering it was done by NPR.
