Mc Donald's, much like Dunkin' Donuts has transitioned well into the the hot and cold beverage business better than expected.
They will continue this trend with their foray into fruit flavored smoothie drinks this summer. Detroit, Michigan the same place that helped them take the Frappe from a regional item to a national success, will be the proving ground for the fruit smoothie.
A small drink will sell for just over $2. Customers in Detroit have the option of paying $1.29 more and substituting a smoothie for a Coke in their value meal.
Specialty beverages are an area of great profit for the restaurant business in the same way that soda and fries have always been - low cost vs. high profit margin. Drinks like, espressos, frappes and smoothies allow the restuarants to make a $1 profit
