BAM: "The 2011 Stars of New York Dance" Honors Susan L. Taylor on Friday November 18th at 7 PM

Susan L. Taylor, editor-in-chief emeritus of Essence Magazine will be honored on Friday, November 18th at 7 pm at "The 2011 Stars of New York Dance" at BAM.

A dance competition(similar to "Dancing with Stars") that raises money for children from low income communities in New York City.

Errol Louis of NY1 News will host the event.

"Beats Rhymes and Life: The Travels of A Tribe Called Quest" will open on Friday, July 15th at BAM.

Director Michael Rapaport documents the iconic rap group, A Tribe Called Quest twenty-year history as he sees it.

ATCQ, with Queens, NY roots and ties to Kool DJ Red Alert and the Jungle Brothers, is one of the 20th century's iconic groups that marked the period where rap shifted from outward boasting and hardcore production to introspective rhymes and eclectic production. Definitely an important group in Hip-Hop.

His latest work documents hip-hop in the 80's before it became a multi-million dollar industry.

Dionne Farris

R&B singer Dionne Farris will perform on Thursday, June 9th at 12 noon at BAM.

Farris was the soulful voice on the group Arrested Development's Grammy winning song "Tennessee." 

She earned another Grammy nomination for the song "I Know" in 1995.

This event is FREE and part of the 2011 R&B Festival at MetroTech.

He has helped new grass combo Bela Fleck & The Flecktones earn 4 Grammies... and earned another nomination for his jazz-funk inflected double album, "Yin Yang".

The composer, author and producer has since collaborated with Prince, Bootsy Collins and Chick Corea.

BAM cinemaFEST Opens Wednesday - June 9


BAMcinemaFest starts Wednesday, June 9, in Brooklyn, with BAMcinematek's picks of the best from major festivals, along with parties, live music, an indoor screening... and more.

The opening premiere will be "Cyrus" at BAM Howard Gilman Opera House, at 7:30 pm.

Followed by an afterparty, featuring complimentary beer from Brooklyn Brewery, and other tasty treats.

Admission is free for ticket holders.

If a show is sold out at the festival, you can stand on the Standby Line, and empty seats will be filled on a first-come, first-serve basis.
