REWIND: Big Daddy Kane & Kool G Rap - "RAW (Five Minutes of Death)"

Marley Marl attracted the best talent, built a crew, produced great records, increased the lifespan/popularity of rap and created a legacy, all without the internet.

Kane's verses on this version show off his use of tone, breath control, use of metaphor, wit and ability to syncopate his flow to create more groove between himself and the track.

Much like musician, he's not only rhyming on top of the track, but finding ways to fit within the track and use parts of the beat to accentuate his verses. Marley Marl's use of mutes and solos would become imitated by other producers.

Juice Crew y'all!

REWIND: Paul Simon - "Me and Julio Down By The Schoolyard"

This is the classic Paul Simon video with cameos by Big Daddy Kane, Biz Markie, Mickey Mantle Mantle, Spudd Webb and John Madden.
The video was done to help the sales of his Negotiations and Love Songs, greatest hits album. The original song is from the 1972 self-titled album.

Cover of the 1972 single for "Me and Julio Down By The Schoolyard" with "Congratulations" on the B-side.

REWIND: Big Daddy Kane Interview from Early 90's

This Kane interview is from the late 80's and although rap had yet to develop into what we see today, it's clear "the God"(Kane) understood he was a star and knew where the genre was going.

I like the comment he made about family being important. If you check all of his interviews, he always made really intelligent, thought provoking statements.

I wish more rappers would do that today... oh well.

REWIND: Biz Markie - "Goin' Off"

From the Biz Markie, Goin' Off album, on the Cold Chillin' label..

Marley Marl really understood the concept of putting an entire album together, especially at a time when few rap producers did - this album had hits.

Big Daddy Kane vs. Rhymefest Mix/Edit

DJ Vlad brings us a special Big Daddy Kane vs. Rhymefest Mix with Rhymefest vocals along side Kane's.

Rhymefest does a great job of showcasing his style, while showing how current/relevant Kane's style still is.

Mind you, Kane's vocals are decades old yet, have a timeless quality that pushes newer emcees to elevate their games.

Big Daddy Kane always delivered compound rhymes, use of metaphors, clear delivery and syncopated styles time and time again..."number one song after number one song".

Fresh...Nah....Classic.

Big Daddy Kane Performance: Live at Prospect Park August 8th, 2009

Brooklyn Nugz did us all a solid by capturing video of the event. I don't know how he did it with that packed crowd, but, he did.

Big Daddy Kane Live @ Celebrate! Brooklyn August 8, 2009
No one works a stage better than Big Daddy Kane... and his band adds another entertainment element to his show. Because they can break the songs down and follow his lead, it allows him to present his rap performance at a level only seen with R&B and Pop performers.

Using monologues and giving the audience directions for the next phase of the show allowed him to take control of the crowd.

His oratory skills, confidence, showmanship, dancing and comfort level were at such a high level, the dude was on automatic.

He said, " I hope none of ya'll don't have to be to work in the morning, because I'm gonna take my time with this tonight." If that's not automatic, I don't know what is. (Clip 3)

Big Daddy Kane may have just raised the bar for rap performance, in a live setting. - Martin Cameron Smith

This third clip in particular shows exactly what I'm talking about.
