Sally Liu attended Columbia University to get her MFA although she is from Beijing. Photo:Carolyn Cole/LA TimesAs much as the Chinese love American films, they do not feel their chances of recreating them can be done in China.
It could be the limited amount of openings to attend school in China, the government restrictions on filmmakers or the vast amount of film programs at the collegiate level in the United States... something is drawing China's young crop of writers and directors to America.

Friday, August 19, 2011 A basketball game where two lefts, a right and another left make it right.
While the basketball game may have been held to encourage goodwill between the U.S. and China, with approximately nine minutes left in the game, "The Brawl for It All" became a more appropriate title for the event.
It's difficult to see exactly how the melee began, but it's more obvious to see how it ended - with rights, lefts, chairs and plastic bottles being thrown.
At one point(check the :20 mark), a Chinese player can be seen punching a Georgetown player repeatedly while he was on the floor.

Chinese knock-off jersey - CBA Lekars - obviously the Los Angeles Lakers don't play in the CBA, wear these colors or spell their name as seen above. Photo: eatliver.com
In China they have moved beyond the idea of replicating the merchandise, they are now recreating the shopping experience withfake stores.
From Apple Stores and Starbuck's to Mc Donald's restaurants they are fully stocked, brick and mortar establishments with employees dressed in company colors.
The only thing that's inauthentic is everything.

Free on bail artist Ai Weiwei waves to media. Photo: David GrayAfter being arrested in April and charged with nothing, the Chinese government has freed artist and activist Ai Weiwei, until further notice.
Weiwei is most noted for being one of the artists who designed the Bird's Nest stadium for the 2008 Beijing Olympics.
One of the things that drew attention to his plight was the documentary he was participating in at the time of his arrest. Alison Klayman spent two years with him, documenting his work.

Her documentary was nearing completion when she got word Weiwei had been detained at a Beijing airport by the Chinese government.

Six-story Barbie store in China. Photo: robotninevia latimes
After opening two years ago in Shanghai China, Mattel has decided to close its lone stand alone store dedicated to the Barbie doll.
The store cost approximately $30 million to build and was part a the company's strategy to strengthen the brand in the country.
It's unfortunate that these types of stores never justify the extremely high costs to operate them.
I remember when Warner Bros. had one in the middle of Times Square at 42nd St. - nice store, but it closed.
The NBA had their store on 5th Ave. around the corner from Radio City Music Hall - another nice store... it too closed.
Now comes news that Mattel's "Barbie Store" is the latest casualty in flagship stores.
Maybe it's just me... but these parent companies have to ask themselves: Is it possible to have too much of a good thing? In this case, hell yeah yes.
I'm just sayin'.
