Many things have changed since the film was made - John Singleton went from new budding director to Hollywood veteran director and has ushered new talent into the film industry like Tyrese Gibson and Taraji P. Henson(among others), South Central Los Angeles has been simply renamed, South Los Angeles and most importantly, the gang violence and drug culture that was depicted in the film is less of a reality today for Southland residents.
Some things haven't - although the film was successful and generated over $60 million after being made for $5.7 million, black filmmakers continue to struggle to get films financed in Hollywood.
Tim Swanson spoke with Singleton about the making of the seminal film and the things that inspired it.
