Conan O'Brien Headed to TBS Late-Night

via latimes

In surprising news, Conan O'Brien has announced he'll be heading to TBS.

He'll do a late-night talk show, debuting this November. The show will air Mondays through Thursdays at 11 pm. This will move George Lopez's "Lopez Tonight" to midnight.

It's clear Conan wants to compete head up with Jay Leno, but, do him one better by coming on a half an hour earlier.

Conan O'Brien Tells NBC He's Not Going Anywhere

Conan O'Brien says he's not going anywhere, just because Jay Leno's show hasn't worked.

Conan O'Brien issued a statement to the "People of Earth" yesterday, stating he had no plans to move the tonight show to the 12:00 am slot because he didn't have the needed time to make his version of The Tonight Show work.

He feels he is being affected by the fall out from the failure of the The Jay Leno Show to catch on with viewers or the affiliate stations.

Many stations told NBC they needed better lead-is to their local news shows. The Jay Leno show never performed as well as the dramas NBC scheduled in the 10:00 pm time-slot.

It's still unclear where Jimmy Fallon will land in all of this. Although his late night show reaches a younger demographic, he could easily find his ratings slipping.

Read Conan's open letter to the "People of Earth"~

People of Earth:

In the last few days, I've been getting a lot of sympathy calls, and I want to start by making it clear that no one should waste a second feeling sorry for me. For 17 years, I've been getting paid to do what I love most and, in a world with real problems, I've been absurdly lucky. That said, I've been suddenly put in a very public predicament and my bosses are demanding an immediate decision.

Six years ago, I signed a contract with NBC to take over The Tonight Show in June of 2009. Like a lot of us, I grew up watching Johnny Carson every night and the chance to one day sit in that chair has meant everything to me. I worked long and hard to get that opportunity, passed up far more lucrative offers, and since 2004 I have spent literally hundreds of hours thinking of ways to extend the franchise long into the future. It was my mistaken belief that, like my predecessor, I would have the benefit of some time and, just as important, some degree of ratings support from the prime-time schedule. Building a lasting audience at 11:30 is impossible without both.

But sadly, we were never given that chance. After only seven months, with my Tonight Show in its infancy, NBC has decided to react to their terrible difficulties in prime-time by making a change in their long-established late night schedule.

Last Thursday, NBC executives told me they intended to move the Tonight Show to 12:05 to accommodate the Jay Leno Show at 11:35. For 60 years the Tonight Show has aired immediately following the late local news. I sincerely believe that delaying the Tonight Show into the next day to accommodate another comedy program will seriously damage what I consider to be the greatest franchise in the history of broadcasting. The Tonight Show at 12:05 simply isn't the Tonight Show. Also, if I accept this move I will be knocking the Late Night show, which I inherited from David Letterman and passed on to Jimmy Fallon, out of its long-held time slot. That would hurt the other NBC franchise that I love, and it would be unfair to Jimmy.

So it has come to this: I cannot express in words how much I enjoy hosting this program and what an enormous personal disappointment it is for me to consider losing it. My staff and I have worked unbelievably hard and we are very proud of our contribution to the legacy of The Tonight Show. But I cannot participate in what I honestly believe is its destruction. Some people will make the argument that with DVRs and the Internet a time slot doesn't matter. But with the Tonight Show, I believe nothing could matter more.

There has been speculation about my going to another network but, to set the record straight, I currently have no other offer and honestly have no idea what happens next. My hope is that NBC and I can resolve this quickly so that my staff, crew, and I can do a show we can be proud of, for a company that values our work.

Have a great day and, for the record, I am truly sorry about my hair; it's always been that way.

Yours,
Conan

Gabourey Sidibe Talks About Meeting Oprah on Conan

via nbc.com

She really comes across as comfortable in all of her interviews. Although, Precious was her first role, I get the feeling, she is a fast learner and will be in more films in the near future.

I also think she the ability to do comedy. She has really good timing. Listen to her tell her Oprah experience.

Newark Mayor Corey Booker to Appear On Tonight Show - Oct.16th

via usatoday

After Conan O'Brien offended the mayor of Newark, New Jersey by telling a joke that said his healthcare package included a bus ticket out of Newark, mayor Corey Booker took to YouTube to voice his concerns and announce O'Brien wasn't welcome in Newark Liberty Airport.

This Friday both men get the chance to sit down and resolve their differences.

The Tonight Show with Conan O'Brien airs on NBC at 11:30pm, weeknights.

Newark, NJ Mayor Corey Booker Bans Conan O'Brien From Newark Airport Over Joke

Last week Conan O'Brien told a joke on his show about the great city of Newark, New Jersey - the joke implied the mayor had a program that would improve resident's health and it included a bus ticket out of Newark.

I actually watched that show and heard the joke. It kinda went over with the audience. The crowd chuckled and Conan kept it moving.

I wondered if something was going to happen because of the size of the city. There was no way, it was going to go unnoticed.

The mayor and some of his staff got to work right away and put together the above video to set the record straight. It was sent to YouTube and I hear he tweeted and had it on his Facebook page. (I have lots of connections in Newark so it's easy to know...don't ask.)

Check out the video and see what the fuss is about...kinda funny.

The guy with the mic was doing this shifty, head bobbing thing, while holding the mic. That portion of the video may have been funnier than the joke.

The New Set For Conan O'Brien's Tonight Show

Long NYT article on Conan taking over for Jay Leno. (enable cookies)

He's throwing Jay's format out. From all of that space in front of the stage I see he has no plans to have the audience up close.
