NFL players were in Washington D.C. lobbying congress to get involved in their talks with the NFL to get a new collective bargaining agreement with ownership.
NFL owners decided not to renew the existing agreement in 2008, which expires March 3, 2011, this sets the stage for a possible lockout if the player reps and management can't come to an agreement about key points :
- owners want to lower player salaries by close to 18 percent
- owners also want more revenue - as it stands players get 60 percent of total league revenue
- players want do not want more games added to scheduled season
- players want to see the owners books(although ownership says they are open)
- the players union is seeking to file an antitrust lawsuit against ownership
- there is also a dispute concerning whether owners should collect TV revenue for unpaid games
To gain support in this fight, the NFL Players Association is turning to politics and old fashioned lobbying to get a deal on the table before pre-season.
Pay attention to this is you're a football fan, because you might not be able to see any football in 2011 if a deal is not reached... an it doesn't look like one is coming any time soon.
