'Dawg Fight' Trailer

Rakontur Films (@rakonturmiami) is noted for their gritty, honest potrayals of unpopular(some would say taboo) subjects - Cocaine Cowboys 1 & 2, The U, Limelight, Square Grouper and their latest Life and Freaky Times of Uncle Luke.

Dawg Fight continues the same tradition, delving into the underground world of backyard, bare-knuckle brawling.

Having a background in boxing and family members who have boxed professionally you immediately understand the risks these guys take - people die in the ring. Boxing is a violent sport. It is because of this that I appreciate the film even more.

On the surface it's easy to dismiss the subject matter, its participants and spectators as shallow unrefined and exploited, but what Rakontur does is change the perspective and take us deeper into the thoughts, minds and lives of this unique group.

It's not a group of unsophisiticated people doing some ignorant shit in the middle of the day, but individuals who have exhausted many of life's options literally fighting to improve their lives... honestly. The boxing acts as as a release for the boxers and the crowd. It also gives those who have great relationships with shame, a chance to turn the tables and experience pride and adulation - even if it is for one hot Florida afternoon.

The catharsis allows some to be forgiven and others to forgive themselves.

It's not pretty, it's not politically correct but... it's real. After watching the fighters who appear in this film all you can think is, "God bless 'em all".

Video: Roy Ayers Project: "Who Is Roy Ayers?" Trailer

As soon as I saw this trailer in my inbox I felt compelled to reply.

The Roy Ayers Project is important and necessary on so many levels, but what I love about it most is it puts the appreciation of the art and artist in the hands of those who have and continue to embrace Mr. Ayers' music the most... the Hip-Hop community and music lovers influenced by Hip-Hop.

This is not an elitist affair with stuffy generic interviews from condescending intellectuals who haven't listened to Roy Ayers' music in over 20 years, it is a collection of sincere discussions captured and set to reworkings of his music.

Tall Black Guy did a great job of producing "Luv Dancin"(the music bed playing with the video).

Nice.

BAM: "Beats Rhymes and Life: The Travels of A Tribe Called Quest" Opens July 15th

A Tribe Called Quest - Photo: BAM

"Beats Rhymes and Life: The Travels of A Tribe Called Quest" will open on Friday, July 15th at BAM.

Director Michael Rapaport documents the iconic rap group, A Tribe Called Quest twenty-year history as he sees it.

ATCQ, with Queens, NY roots and ties to Kool DJ Red Alert and the Jungle Brothers, is one of the 20th century's iconic groups that marked the period where rap shifted from outward boasting and hardcore production to introspective rhymes and eclectic production. Definitely an important group in Hip-Hop.

Internet Piracy Hurting Independent Filmmakers

Filmmaker, Greg Carter estimates he has lost $100,000 because of free downloading.
via latimes

Greg Carter saved and acquired the financing to shoot a film, "A Gangland Love Story" for $250,000. The film was written, directed and produced by Carter. After its release he found out free download links were all over the Internet.

Although his film could be purchased at Amazon or on Pay-Per View it was being viewed by 60,000 viewers online.

Indie filmmakers rely on DVD sales to make a profit(since their films don't make it to theaters). When the film is pirated online it slows sales of the DVD.
