Artist Jongil Ma working on installation on Governors Island. Photo: Sara KrulwichAs of March, Governors Island has provided studio space to 24 visual artists and 4 performing groups. They use an old munitions storehouse from approximately 7:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.All of the full-time artists were selected by a "panel of experts" (kinda vague huh?).The studio is run by the Lower Manhattan Cultural Council, a nonprofit that helped revive the downtown art scene post 9/11.Only artists or their friends are allowed in the studio at this time...but...beginning Saturday July 23, visitors will be invited to watch the artists work on three weekends.Find out more about this effort to preserve the arts.

The idea is to have 3 days(1 day each month) of sport, fun and leisure in an urban setting, in the hopes of redefining what we call community.
The event will begin at 12pm - Ferry ride to the island is FREE. Battery Park Maritime Building adjacent to the Staten Island Ferry.
The scheduled sports will be:
- Badminton - July 11th (This Saturday)
- Table Tennis - August 22nd
- Bocce - Sept. 26th

MOS DEF Presents THE ECSTATIC TOUR @ Governors Island - Saturday, Sept. 12th

Mos Def Presents The Ecstatic Tour with Jay Electronica and Medina Green touches down on The Beach @ Governors Island this Saturday evening.
Doors open at 7pm and the show starts at 9pm. VIP tickets are available, a VIP ticket includes:
- A cruise around lower Manhattan with Mos Def -boat leaves Southstreet Seaport Pier 16 at 7:30pm and cruises until 9pm.
- 2 hour open bar aboard the boat
- Mos and guests will be dropped off at Governors Island - he will not perform on the boat.
Tickets:
- Advance:$35
- Day of Show:$40.00
- VIP: $150
