OUTSIDE IN: The Story of Art In The Streets (Trailer)

A film by Alex Stapleton.

The film features renowned artists Shepard Fairey, Lee Quiñones, Swoon, Futura, Mister Cartoon, Revok, Martha Cooper, Invader to name a few.
Director Alex Stapleton (Corman's World: Exploits of a Hollywood Rebel) documents the artist's creative process, their pitfalls with the law, the poetic impermanence of their craft and the artists' evolution from the back seat of a cop car to the walls of a well-respected institution.

L.A. Street Art Pioneers Featured in MOCA "Art In The Streets" Exhibition

Chaz Bojorquez(pictured), Craig Stecyk & Risk are part of the MOCA "Art In The Streets" exhibition. Photo: Liz O. BaylenThe Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles will pay homage to "street art" and its contribution to the art world.

The show is a celebration and a historical documentation of the ways graffiti and "folk art" have evolved over past four decades.

The work of Craig Stecyk(who brought the surfer and skate scene element to the street art) and Risk(who brought New York subway-style-graffiti to L.A.) will also featured in the show.

Read Chaz Bojorquez's interview and find out what the differences are between tagging in New York versus Los Angeles, why he declined the offer to work with Nike, Adidas and others and the role Chicano pride plays in all he does...

In-and-Out-of-Jail Graffiti Artist Back in Jail...Again

Cristian Gheorghiu a.k.a "Smear" at one of his art exhibits. Photo: Stefano Paltera

via lanow

Graffiti artist "Smear" goes by the name Cristian Gheorghiu when he's at his art exhibits or living an honest life.

Problem is, the Los Angeles city attorney and sheriff deputies believe he's been doing less of the clean living and more of the graffiti that got him going through the revolving door at the LAPD.

"Smear" wasn't locked up for actually doing anything - it was said he was in posession of art materials that imply that he was either planning or going to vanadlize some part of town.

Read more about how a "piece" by the L.A. river started a string of events that lead to "Smear" siting in jail.
