While in Los Angeles Snoop Dogg and KRS-One performed the classic Boogie Down Productions hit "South Bronx at HVW8 - video was rolling and satisfaction was provided... for all.
HVW8 was shooting/producing the "What It Do" video.
Always liked KRS's writing style. He didn't try to make a point, choose a side or reframe the discussion to fit his image.
Here he puts himself in the position of the lead to illustrate the result of bad choices, caused by a love for material and the practice of materialism and consumerism.
It's time for rappers to study the styles and techniques of earlier artists the same way artists from other genres do. Lots can be learned about story telling or linguistic devices. In this song, KRS's story is linear - it takes place at one point and moves forward in time.
He also uses a variation of the same phrase before each chorus to return with something familiar to the listener. It makes the song catchy and makes you feel you can follow along.
Of course he later moved away from this style using a more direct and admonishing style, but for this time the teacher didn't lecture... he uses a more Socratic method.
"Now tell me what the "F" are YOU supposed to do?"
I wish some cats would understand how influential KRS-One was to the early NWA/D.O.C. records.
KRS rocked different flows, made the listener think and talked that gangsta ish. He and Rakim ushered in an era where the rapper was taking the recording process more seriously and used studio techniques to enhance the records.
They arranged their songs and create structure.
Ced Gee played a big role in shaping that Criminal Minded album(if you don't know who Ced Gee is, raise your right hand... and slap yourself).
I'm especially pleased to see this issue because I posted on Ice Cubes latest single in April and felt it necessary to mention the prominent role he played in East Coast/West Coast unity early in his career.
Long before he left NWA, he was friendly with a number of rappers out of New York. He was featured prominently in EPMD's "The Big Payback" video, along with Eazy E, so it only made sense for him to feel comfortable enough to record down at the now defunct Green Street Studios with The Bomb Squad(Public Enemy's production team) in Soho.
Waxpoetic examines the fruits of the earlier union between Cube and the East.
There is also a feature on Ice T, another West coast "G", originally from Newark, NJ.
There are still tapes floating around of Ice T being interviewed on New York radio in the early 80's with Afrika Islam. He was always a cool dude in person and never acted otherwise, which contributes to the respect he receives from all segments and generations of Hip Hop(including this writer).
The EPMD and KRS-One round out the rest of the Waxpoetics covers.

I told you about this event in August. Although the weather was a little unpredictable, J&R MusicFest made it clear, the event would go one rain or shine.
They told our fashion editor, Verona, if it got too bad, they'd just move the event inside. Now that's what I'm talking about!
Good times were had by all and the world was a better place... kinda, sort of.
J&R Music and Computer World have been putting the J&R MusicFest on for years and have the experience and respect for the artists to get top name talent every year... it also helps that they're one of the best computer, electronic and record stores in NYC.
The MusicFest will feature 3 days of FREE concerts in City Hall Park from Mario, The Clipse, The Smithereens, J Moss, Melinda Watts, KRS-One and Buckshot, LeToya and Roy Hargroveand some of the biggest names in Jazz, Pop, Latin and Hip-Hop.
J&R knows how to put on a concert, so show for this, if you are going to be in the city.
There's going to be a lot going on all over the country with the unofficial end of summer slowly approaching. I'll keep you posted on some, most or all of the happenings.
