Steven A. Clark x Mr. Familiar - "Chemistry"
Have Brunch with Steven A. Clark in Brooklyn(shot by Oaklyn):
Starz original series Magic City premieres April 6th on Starz.
It's the story of late 50's Miami at the time Castro siezed Havana, forcing America to deal with the many problems being shut off from Cuba created. Those problems would be dealt with and others created, where politics, vice and fun take place... in Magic City.
Rakontur Films (@rakonturmiami) is noted for their gritty, honest potrayals of unpopular(some would say taboo) subjects - Cocaine Cowboys 1 & 2, The U, Limelight, Square Grouper and their latest Life and Freaky Times of Uncle Luke.
Dawg Fight continues the same tradition, delving into the underground world of backyard, bare-knuckle brawling.
Having a background in boxing and family members who have boxed professionally you immediately understand the risks these guys take - people die in the ring. Boxing is a violent sport. It is because of this that I appreciate the film even more.
On the surface it's easy to dismiss the subject matter, its participants and spectators as shallow unrefined and exploited, but what Rakontur does is change the perspective and take us deeper into the thoughts, minds and lives of this unique group.
It's not a group of unsophisiticated people doing some ignorant shit in the middle of the day, but individuals who have exhausted many of life's options literally fighting to improve their lives... honestly. The boxing acts as as a release for the boxers and the crowd. It also gives those who have great relationships with shame, a chance to turn the tables and experience pride and adulation - even if it is for one hot Florida afternoon.
The catharsis allows some to be forgiven and others to forgive themselves.
It's not pretty, it's not politically correct but... it's real. After watching the fighters who appear in this film all you can think is, "God bless 'em all".
Having followed Meek Mill for a minute I was impressed and pleased to hear he has signed with Rick Ross' Maybach Music Group earlier this spring. The main reason... Rick Ross has the highest output of music at this point compared to any other rapper and Meek would benefit from that.
Knowing Meek Mill would get a chance to be heard nationally on multiple songs with various artists over beats from different producers, I couldn't wait.
As always, Meek Mill delivered. Dream Chaser is another example of the Philly spitter's consistency and quality.
Tourists viewing a piece. Photo: Miami New TimesMiami's graffiti bike(and Vespa) tours are a hit with South-Florida tourists interested in biking around Wynwood and the Design District.
The real estate bubble left a lot of vacant condos and office buildings in Miami's downtown area.
As recently as three years ago, the area was avoided after business hours, but all of that has changed with the influx of younger renters and buyers who see downtown Miami as the place to be.
Following the new residents were the retail stores and restaurants.
Downtown Miami isn't as hot as it once was, but it isn't as cold as it had become.
The questions in this interview are a joke, but the upside is we get to find out what actually happened... even if it was hard to understand the first three times.
Key sound bites:
"...very hurt, very hurt..."
"...I was very humiliadated..."
"... since I was born I was never, nobody never slapped me..."
Don't know if you saw the Miami Beach confrontation during the Ultra Music Festival, but, the latest from the police is, they were attacked. The only problem is they are the only people seen attacking anyone.
They even charged a bystander with assaulting an officer, resisting arrest and a bunch of other charges.
In this episode of Miami's NBC NiteCap, Peter sits down with actor/director/producer Mario Van Peebles to discuss his directing of 50 Cent's new film, "Things Fall Apart".
They also talk about politics of Hollywood, the influence of Black cinema and life imitating art.
