Nelson George - Toronto Film Festival - Discussing Brooklyn Boheme

Filmmaker Nelson George discusses Brooklyn Boheme, the changes Brooklyn has experienced since the 90's and possible reasons for the latest demographic shifts within the borough.

I spent so much time in Brooklyn during the 90's that it is still difficult to embrace how much it has changed since then, the same with parts  of Far Rockaway Queens, the Bronx and Newark, NJ.

That gentrification is real.

"The Plot Against Hip Hop"(Nelson George) Trailer

"This video is a teaser for my upcoming novel The Plot Against Hip Hop. Some of it was shot at this summer's Brooklyn Hip Hop Festival under the Brooklyn Bridge and the rest on Crosby Street in Soho, where a major event in the novel takes place. Through a murder investigation the history of hip hop is revisited and an underground history (one that has nothing to do with mix tapes) is unearthed. Official pub date is November 2011, but you can buy it now at all the usual web sites. Welcome to the world of our hero D. Hunter."

Nelson George's 'Brooklyn Boheme' - (5 Min. Teaser)

Though it is still in post-production, Nelson George and Diane Paragas have decided to leak the first five minutes of what looks to be one of the best culturally important and defining films, when it comes to the exportation of late 20th century Brooklyn art to the world - 'Brooklyn Boheme'.

Through his voice-over, George sees parallels between his Fort Green, Brooklyn, circa 1980s-90s and the Harlem Renaissance.

Where all similarities end is that the "Brooklyn Renaissance" wasn't fueled by racism and segregation(as the Harlem Renaissance had been) but was produced from a bright sense of optimism, self-determination, a hint of elitism and all of the idiosyncrasies of aspirational, upwardly mobile people forming the world they wanted to see versus the one in which they lived.

Their Brooklyn didn't improve or assimilate... they originated... and elevated the game.

Fresh.

Nelson George Takes You to the Hamptons

As summer approaches, I thought it would be a good idea to feature places that could be enjoyed during the warmer months.

The multi-faceted and international, Nelson George takes us on a tour of the Hamptons and introduces us to all it has to offer.

He even stops by a party being thrown by Russell Simmons.

The party looked like a scene out of 'The Great Gatsby'. I kept expecting Tom and Daisy Buchanan to walk by.

Sade feature in LA Times - Written by Nelson George

Sade's new tour won't begin until Spring of 2011. Photo: Sophie Muller

One of my favorite writers and music critics - Nelson George, interviewed Sade for the LA Times... while in New York City.

As always, he puts Sade's success in context by juxtaposing it with the social and creative landscape in which it was created. His love for most "creative things 80's" lends the authenticity needed to make a Sade interview more than generic.

The singer discusses everything from her spontaneous decisions, to eating meat after being a vegetarian for nine years.

Read why her new tour will start in Spring of 2011 although the album it supports came out in February of 2010.
