Serena Williams Kicks Off Australian Open Tourney This Week

via usatoday & australianopen

There's been much talk about Serena Williams entering the 2012 Australian Open with an ankle injury and having to deal with the recent passing of the family's longtime advisor.

To be fair, many of tennis' brightest stars are injured, (Rafael Nadal, Venus Williams recently withdrew, Kim Clijsters and Caroline Wozniacki). Despite the injury Serena appears to be moving well. From the looks of the above Australian Open practice session her balance is excellent, her weight is down and her spirits are up.

Serena Williams Fined $82,500, Gets 2 Years Probation for U.S. Open Incident

Serena Williams discussing her exchange of words with line judge(far left) with U.S. Open officials.

via foxnews

Serena Williams was fined a record $82,500 for her admonishment of a line judge at this years U.S. Open.

She will be put on probation for the next two years, meaning, if she does it again, her fine will be doubled and she could barred from the U.S. Open.

You may recall she got disagreed with an official on Sept. 12th during U.S. Open women's finals match against Kim Clijsters. Upon her serving, the line judge called a foot fault - a call you almost never hear at that point of a match - thus giving a point to Clijsters.

Williams again prepared to serve, but, this time walked over to the woman and started asking her how she could make such a call?

I watched the match and have to admit I was shocked at the call! Williams had rallied back from having been down and actually had a chance to win the match. It was unfortunate because Clijsters, who played a great match, wasn't given the chance to win by defeating her. Any good athlete prefers to not have an asterisk next to a win.

Nike + Serena Williams, Roger Federer and Raphael Nadal Show Off Their U.S. Open Fashions

Raphael Nadal and Serena Willilams

With the U.S. Open starting next Monday, (August 31st) Serena Williams, Roger Federer and Raphael Nadal were in mid-town Manhattan on Broadway between 22nd and 23rd Streets to show off their Nike outfits.

The street was blocked off and a tennis court erected on the street!

They took lots of photos and hit a few balls around with kids from four different inner-city programs; New York Junior Tennis League, Athletes for Charity, Mentoring USA andNew York Parks Foundation(the one's who sponsored the CityParks Concert Series this summer).

Each program received a $10,000 donation from Nike and the kids got free Nike gear

Federer's was said to be the most surprising to John McEnroe who said, "You'd have to be a real macho man to wear those colors."

Maybe if McEnroe were a little hipper he would have known color is in this year, but, McEnroe is always saying something.

Be sure to catch the US Open next week. I'll be following the matches, eliminations and giving links for scores/additional coverage, just as I did with Wimbledon.

Serena and Venus Williams Advance at Wimbledon

via LATimes

Serena playing strong, beat Daniela Hantuchova of Slovakia, 6-3, 6-1. She is a favorite among tennis insiders to win it all.

via the Seattle Times

Venus knocks out former No. 1 player Ana Ivanovic. The Serbian retired while trailing 6-1, 0-1 due to a leg injury.

Update: As I'm sure you know by now both sisters will be playing each other in the finals.
Look for this to be an evenly matched affair. While Serena has a "power game" and
an excellent serve, Venus is better in my opinion at returning and being able to cover the court. Her height and reach advantage won't come into play as much as her speed...watch. To the casual observer Serena may seem to have the upper hand, but, the real fans remember Venus has been playing longer...and when healthy...she is unstoppable.
