REWIND: James Brown - "Super Bad" 1973 - Soul Train

Sometimes word can spoil the moment, so rather than distract you from the main event, I'll dispense with the pleasantries, keep it righteous and get to the point... press play for the James Brown experience.

Soul Train: The Miracles - "Do It Baby"

This line-up included Billy Griffin who acted as Smokey Robinson's replacement. The Miracles benefitted from Griffin's songwriting, singing and production skills.

Do It Baby was a popular song at the time of its release and later enjoyed success as an oft sampled record. The other record they scored big with during the time was Love Machine, which is an excellent example the dynamic range Griffin brought to the group, being able to go uptempo.

Rick James VS Don Cornelius

This video will give you an idea of how Don ran his show.
Although he let the legendary Rick James be himself, he wasn't going to let him take over his show and like it.
Don Cornelius put Rick in check.

Betty Wright Interview from 1977 and "Tonight Is The Night" on Soul Train

Betty Wright is one of those soul singers whose legendary status is confirmed by her ability to stay on the scene and write & perform classic material.

I think I'll have to do another Betty Wright posting this weekend!

Find out what's going on with Ms. B at her Facebook page...

Video: Erykah Badu "Window Seat" - Soul Train Music Awards

Erykah Badus's performance of Window Seat was one of the many good performances at this year's Soul Train Music Award show.

The 2010 Soul Train Music Awards was one of the best produced award shows for African-American music that I've seen in years. The performances were solid, the pairings made sense, the live band was good and the set design was simple, yet impressive.

REWIND: FIve Stairsteps - "Ooh Child" on Soul Train

The Don Cornelius introduction at the top is too cool.

One of the all-time classic songs. They later went on to become "The Invisible Man's Band".

"Soul Train: The Hippest Trip in America" Documentary airs Tonight on VH1

Be sure to catch "Soul Train: The Hippest Trip in America" TONIGHT at 9:30 p.m. on VH1.

Check out this clip below:

Don takes questions from the Soul Train dancers for Ike and Tina:

This documentary not only follows the evolution of the groundbreaking program, but, illustrates why it is important to embrace, protect and support a brand like Soul Train.

It celebrated the best in a people who had sometimes been treated the worst. It inspired and made it possible for viewers to dream and possibly become a part of the Soul Train experience... which is the American experience.

The whole time, doing it with pride, genuine love and authenticity.

I can't front, I've always loved Soul Train, especially the older episodes I had never seen. What other show could make future generations go back and rediscover it's older shows and love them?

Only one... Soul Train.

REWIND: BT Express - "Do It (Til You're Satisfied)"

I'm gonna be somewhere gettin' down to this song this weekend!

The rhythm and groove are so important to creating the foundation for the bass line to drop into the track. This is that pure funk.

I always love seeing the Soul Train dancers. They show you what you should be getting out of the groove... and if you're not getting it... you ain't funkin' right!

Erykah Badu & Chaka Khan - 2009 Soul Train Music Awards - Chaka Khan Tribute

Erykah and Chaka Khan performing at the 2009 Soul Train Music Award's Chaka Khan Tribute.

images via picturegroup

Erykah was part of a Soul Train Music Awards tribute to Chaka Khan which aired Sunday night on the Centric and BET networks.

The tribute included performances by singers Ledisi, Angie Stone and Fantasia.

Ms. Badu looked and sounded better than ever. Everything from her hair to her Native-American ensemble was on point. She did an excellent job of interpreting the Chaka Khan classic, "Stay". Her use of vibrato and the way she sustained her notes at the end of her phrases allowed her to sing with a soulfulness and ease that few can emulate.
