NYC Times Square in Need of Facelift - $15K Competition Created

The New York DOT(Department of Transportation) has launched a design competition to spruce up the new temporary pedestrian areas in Times Square, created by closing traffic from Broadway and 7th Avenue between 47th and 42nd streets.

Originally planned as a temporary experiment("Bullsh%t!"), the "newly announced permanent project" is in need of the aesthetic expertise of more artistically inclined individuals(think High Line in the Meatpacking District on the West Side). Because the area was not planned, there has been criticism about the inconsistency of the chairs, tables and gravel being used.

The DOT's, "reNEWable Times Square" project is requesting designers and artists living and working in NYC to design bold ways to use the space for everyday use and major holiday events like the 4th of July and New Years Eve.

The winner receives $15,000(from The Mayor's Fund) and a budget from the existing DOT contract. Deadline to submit proposals is April 16th 2010 - design to be installed by July.

New Disney Store Coming To Times Square

The new Disney Store will open in the space previously occupied by Virgin Records in Times Square. Photo: crainsnewyork

Although the Disney Store left its 5th Ave location, that doesn't mean it's leaving midtown Manhattan. From the above photo you can see they plan to open fall 2010 in their new Times Square location.

The 5th Ave. location cost nearly $2000 a square foot while Times Square real estate is going for $800 - $1000 a square foot.

Last spring I heard Disney was shopping for new digs in the Times Square area and all I could think was, "Good, someone there gets it!". Times Square and Disney are a perfect fit - they both say "fun".

Forever 21 To Occupy Old Virgin Megastore Times Square Location

via racked

There has been speculation, but, now there is proof that Forever 21 is coming to Times Square. The store will open in 2010.

The retailer will take over what was once the Virgin Megastore and enough adjoining real estate to create a 90,000-square feet block long store.

There are 3 other stores in Manhattan, but, this store will be bigger than any of them.

Considering they've now closed off the street in front of that location, the foot traffic should be out of this world.

MTV To Close Times Square Studio

Viacom the parent company of MTV has decided not to renew the lease on their studio space at 1515 Broadway, between 44th and 45th streets.

While they have renewed the lease on the office space, they chose not to extend the lease for the 22,216 foot second-floor studio.

The studio with its 16 foot high windows was primarily used for "TRL" and often hosted other live MTV programs or specials. When "TRL" was cancelled, the higher ups at MTV saw less of a need for the space.

It's not clear, but, because the MTV store space must go with the studio space, the store will likely close.

I guess the spaces can become a decent restaurant, with great views of Time Square...moving right along...

Lauren Luke A Hit At Times Square Sephora

via nytimes

Fans flock to the new Sephora in Times Square to meet Lauren Luke the self-styled make-up artist famous for her YouTube make-up application tutorials.

This huge opportunity for her because Sephora will be selling her make-up line exclusively. The interest in the line was great to say the least.

At one point 20 women competed to duplicate a look by Lauren Luke.

Seriously, that crowd was really feeling her. We may see a lot more of her in America by the Spring.

Sephora Times Square - Now Open

via racked

The flagship Sephora Times Square store had its grand opening last week (they have an existing store in Times Square).

The store is located at 5 Times Square (7th Ave and 43rd Street), this is their flagship store.

This particular store will be the only one to debut the "by Lauren Luke" make up collection.

Lauren's story is interesting because she built her reputation/career showing people how to apply make up using YouTube. What started out as a way to sell makeup brushes and eye-shadow morphed into her creating online tutorials that have become really popular.

The 27 year old single mom from Britain closed her deal with Sephora to carry her line in stores and online during the Spring of 2009.

Some interior shots of the store.

Sections Of Broadway Running Through Times Square and Herald Square Closed To Cars

Mayor Bloomberg has decided to cut traffic off to encourage more pedestrian traffic in these areas and cut down on pollution(yeah right). They say the diagonal way that Broadway intersects other streets congests traffic.

They're only going to create gridlock on 7th Ave/5th Ave. and the area surrounding Rockefeller Center.
