Nelson George - "All Hail the Beat"

Filmmaker Nelson George(@nelsongeorge) has done it again with "All Hail the Beat!" An incredible short documentary about the Roland TR-808 Rhythm Composer drum machine, one of the first programmable machines.

The TR-808 was used to produce drum sounds for classic rap, r&b or techno songs(Marvin Gaye's "Sexual Healing" and Afrika Bambaataa's "Planet Rock"). The drum machine's sounds were so popular that even as samplers came into vogue, producers simply sampled the sounds from the unit and worked with them. Those sounds are used to produce beats heard in today's music.

This film was directed by Nelson George, and was part of the Focus Forward series(@FocusFwdFilms) for Tribeca Flim Festival '12.

A Tribe Called Quest

'Beats, Rhymes & Life: The Travels of A Tribe Called Quest' is a documentary about one of the most prolific groups of the 90's.

Director Michael Rapaport takes us behind-the-scenes with intercut interviews and performances by group members.

You may recall there were some tensions surrounding this film. Rapaport and Q-Tip had a falling out that hurt the promotion of the film. Rather than go into detail, I'll ask you to click this link to read about it(lot of stuff).
