Dam-Funk + Wax Poetics - "A Prince Mix by Dam-Funk"

The Pasadena native and Leimert Park funkster drops a Prince mix in association with Wax Poetics mag's ten year anniversary and 50th issue.

If there is anyone who knows Prince's discography it's DaM and if there is anyone who knows how to DJ a set it's DaM. The fact that he included two of my favorites - Soft and Wet & Ballad of Dorothy Parker definitely helped get my approval. Sticky Like Glue should easily remind people of The Purple One's blues and funk roots - late 70s - early 80s.

Dig in and enjoy.

Congrats Wax Poetics and thanks DaM-Funk.

1. Prince & the Revolution – 17 Days (original version)
2. DฤM-FunK – 17 Days (D-F Re-Freak)
3. Prince – Irresistible Bitch (Props Re-Edit)
4. Prince (featuring Andre Cymone & Pepe Willie) – One Man Jam
5. Prince – Wet Dream Cousin
6. Prince – Dirty Mind (1981 Live Version)
7. Prince – Soft & Wet (original version)
8. Prince – Ballad Of Dorothy Parker (D-F Extended Re-Edit)
9. Prince – Sticky Like Glue (Props Re-Edit)

Waxpoetics Issue 46 - Jazz's Mad Men - George Duke and George Benson Cover

You can always count on Waxpoetics to bring you the most important and rare info, interviews, and photos.

Check out this Jazz influenced issue of artists unique to a particular period in Jazz as it transitioned from straight ahead into Jazz-Fusion(what a beautiful time).

This is when independents with major label backing came into play(think CTI, Fantasy)

Two of my favorite artists named George are on the cover.

I'm glad they included the Jamaica jazz/funk/soul players White, Wright, Miller, Irvine, Browne.

Head over to Waxpoetics and make it happen for yourself...

Waxpoetics Issue No. 41 - Available Now

Waxpoetics is back with No. 41, the May/June issue which shines the spotlight on Ice Cube, EPMD, Ice T and KRS-One.

I'm especially pleased to see this issue because I posted on Ice Cubes latest single in April and felt it necessary to mention the prominent role he played in East Coast/West Coast unity early in his career.

Long before he left NWA, he was friendly with a number of rappers out of New York. He was featured prominently in EPMD's "The Big Payback" video, along with Eazy E, so it only made sense for him to feel comfortable enough to record down at the now defunct Green Street Studios with The Bomb Squad(Public Enemy's production team) in Soho.

Waxpoetic examines the fruits of the earlier union between Cube and the East.

There is also a feature on Ice T, another West coast "G", originally from Newark, NJ.

There are still tapes floating around of Ice T being interviewed on New York radio in the early 80's with Afrika Islam. He was always a cool dude in person and never acted otherwise, which contributes to the respect he receives from all segments and generations of Hip Hop(including this writer).

The EPMD and KRS-One round out the rest of the Waxpoetics covers.

Check out EPMD's Big Payback video with cameos by NWA:

Adrian Younge: The Man and Mind Behind The "Black Dynamite" Score & Soundtrack

Adrian Younge

Adrian Younge is the composer and editor of the recently released feature film, "Black Dynamite".

He is a self-taught musician who plays every instrument on the score and soundtrack... a film editor who sparked the idea to create the trailer, that later helped the film acquire financing and in case you didn't know... he fronts the Black Dynamite Sound Orchestra.

This modern day "Soul Man", may be the next Isaac Hayes, Roy Ayers or Quincy Jones... Curtis Mayfield, perhaps.

Whomever you compare him to, he did a damn good job on the Black Dynamite score and soundtrack, available on Waxpoetics. In terms of instrument selection, musical arrangements, mixes, song tempos and production he managed to capture the tone and feel of the early 70's "Black Action" film.

When I say he captured the tone accurately, I say this with over 15 years experience as a producer/musician/engineer and having had a grandfather, Roland Andrews, who played with the likes of Lee Morgan, John Coltrane, Benny Golson, Charlie Parker and Thelonius Monk. I say this to say, I'm quite familiar with the music he is recording and he nailed it!

Knowing my way around the recording studio, I know that it is difficult to achieve the sonic qualities he achieved in recording. Besides the tape saturation provided by using analog 2-inch tape(running at 15 or 30 ips) he needed to capture the acoustics of the instruments and vocals using complex microphone techniques, equalization and processing. Hell...I'm still wondering whether they mixed the project on an analog board!

At times his records sound as if they were recorded during the early to mid 70's.

To give you an idea of what I'm speaking of, check out the "Black Dynamite Score" Documentary:

Listen to Adrian explain his process of achieving the soulful lo-tech(by today's standards) sound he strove to achieve for the Black Dynamite Score: (click 2-3 times to play)
